Survivor China: Episode 1

There's something relaxing about watching Survivor, especially after coming off of Big Brother. Something lovely about not forming opinions about what should be broadcast before it actually is. I went into tonight's premiere with one thing on my mind: Entertain me, Mr. Burnett. Boy did he!

The setting is incredible. When the premiere began, I couldn't help but think of the movie, "The Last Emperor." Stunning, with cinematography to match.

The first experience for the Survivors already had me forming opinions about them - 2 negative, the rest positive. I'll get Courtney out of the way first. The girl did nothing but irk me all night, from the start to the finish. Her behavior in the Temple was reprehensible, and it just got worse once she was in camp.

I wasn't thrilled with Leslie's behavior in the temple either, but at least hers came from a place of personal belief and respect to that belief. My wish for her was that she could open herself to new experiences, rather than fear them, especially since Jeff made a point of telling everyone, likely mostly for her benefit, that this was not a religious ceremony, but one of welcoming.

On the other hand, I became enchanted with Peih Gee and Denise during this opening ceremony. Peih Gee's raw emotion at simply being in the land of her ancestry was a beautiful thing to watch. Denise, the lunch lady, displayed the openness and excitement and appreciation I would wish for everyone.

First impressions...

With just this first episode, I'm already forming favorites. I was really rooting for James' team during the challenge. With the exception of Courtney, I'm just loving Fei Long tribe as a whole and as individuals. They work together extremely well, and they get along - so far - and I'm just diggin' em.

James, Jean Robert, Todd and Aaron all strike me as fierce competitors, and all with different and complimentary strengths: physical, mental and social. I have to wonder if the conversation shown between Jean-Robert and Todd, where they acknowledge each other's mental game, was a subtle foreshadowing of things to come.

Lastly, Leslie's kind words to James when he expressed his concerns to her about his social game won my heart, since I'm already loving James, and got her back on my good side.

On the Zhan Hu side, I loved Frosti. He virtually flew during that competition, and his attitude is terrific. I was also quite taken with the wrestler chick, and since she survived the week, I think her social game and her physical prowess will do her well.

Since I'm posting this before the show airs on the west coast, I wont give away "the tribe has spoken" moment, but please be advised that it is given away in the comment section.

All in all, I thought it was a terrific season opener, and I have very high hopes for Survivor China. Thanks for coming over here. I can't wait to read your thoughts!

Well, being from NE Tennessee, I have to say that I am really disappointed that Chicken was the first to go! We all get a kick out of people from our region (and Western Virginia is part of our region) being on Survivor. I guess no one will ever out-do Big Tom from several seasons ago...
I love learning about the culture of the area the survivors are in and I really look forward to seeing what China has to share with us this season!
I believe Survivor is just the ticket to help with the withdrawals I am going through with the end of BB8. With that said, on to other adventures!....

I think P.G.'s ear rings are way out of place on Survivor. It just struck me as really odd to waer ginat jangly peices of glass. Catch that on a tree or obstacle challenge????

Firstly, let it be known...I have only watched survivor the last two seasons...but how else can a girl get over Big Brother withdrawl??

AWWW...I felt bad for Chicken tonight. He seemed like he sincerely wanted to give it a go...I feel like he deserved to be there more than other people. Just goes to show that in this game it pays to be an "unmentioned" person...the kind of character that doesn't slack but also one that doesn't have too much of an opinion early on...

The husband was hoping for Chicken to go first. I, on the other hand, took an immediate dislike for Leslie.

Isn't the immunity idol an, um, IDOL? ... which you are WORSHIPPING?

And, I'll bet money that my cute little gay flight attendant doesn't make it until the end. Richard Hatch was the first, last and only openly gay man that will ever be allowed to win a reality show.

And seriously, bras are useless unless you have other bras and a washer and dryer to keep that sucker taut. Those buffs will act like sports bras.

Wasn't too crazy about Sherea and Todd (he's like son of Dustin & Eric) either.

oh, and one more thing. the only thing worse than seeing denise's thighs, is having to hear that Courtney is already over it and so annoyed because people from New York are not like that. People from New york are not supportive of other people, I mean people from New york do not say things like "good Job", and "way to go" Oh, and people from new york already know how to do a buddhist welcome ceremony, really people from New york are so cultured and would never be around people not from New york!!! Oh, one more thing...Courtney looks so familiar to me, maybe I know her....as soon as anyone finds out where she is from, can you let me know. Thanks!

I am a huge Survivor fan, I have watched from season 1. Chicken was the right one to go now although he would have been great if he had of stepped up and taken the silent cues that his tribe was giving him. It was apperent that they were looking for someone to take the lead on the shelter building. The other one I believe is in danger is ashley, she needs to work hard to remove the target off her back.... Jan texas

Ever since they had the success with Rodger and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, they always seem to pick an older southern man. Didn't work this time. Being married to a Texan, I feel bad for him, but I can see how he hurt the tribe.

I liked both men who stepped up to lead the tribes (was that Dave & Aaron, or am I confused??), and I liked Frosti too!! So far.....

anonymous - As far as Chicken goes...
He did attempt to share his opinion about how to build the tribe shelter when they arrived at their camp the first day. He was ignored/disagreed with, so he said he was done. NO more opinions. His mistake was in not changing his tune when someone ELSE asked for his opinion later on. He should have given it since he was specifically asked. It turned out to be a fatal mistake...

I think that he was on a tribe whos top priorty was to get to know each other and not to get shelter, they sersiously need to get together...I also thought that he gave up to fast... if it were me I would do as much as I could myself and hope that others would get the message, after all I would not want to be cold and wet. Hi Carolyn, and ty so much for having the Survivor Dish! Awesome!
Here is my take on tonight's episode.....first of all, James is the man! My fav to win, but I also like Amanda too since she is from Montana, the outdoors girl but also the beauty pageant girl, versatile, I like that. I was iffy about Leslie before the show, because of Jameka from BB8, couldnt take another hypocrite, but as the show progressed she really started to grow on me and I loved how she took the time to try to get to know James and bring him out of his quiet shell. And I couldnt blame her for not wanting to bow down to the Buddha because that is not her God and I would feel the same way. Really wanted to see Chicken go farther because he is from VA just like me! But here is my thought on that......there was a scene in the previews showing Chicken saying "I have never seen anything like this before"and he clearly looked upset! Now I saw none of that tonight so I am wondering if he is not brought back into the game at some point.....hmmmm, something to think about!
Was not impressed w/ Ashley at all tonight but she has potential I think, looks like scenes for next week show her getting more involved and being more of an asset to the team, so maybe there is hope for her yet but she was my pick to go over chicken tonight.
As far as Courtney goes......OMG, she gets on my NERVES!! LOL She really needs to go as soon as possible! The team she is on is my favorite and I just hope she doesnt bring them down!
Well, I am writing a book so I will end here....to be continued...lol!

I'd bet anything that Courtney isn't a Manhattan girl. She's Statin Island or Queens or the Bronx, but she doesn't even pretend to represent Manhattan. She's classless and she's going to irritate her team members really fast, what with the 'tude and the lack of work ethic. You KNOW she isn't going to be fishing, cooking, or gathering fruit. She's gonna be sunning, complaining, and waiting to be ordered around so she can bitch about how bossy everyone is.

I was sorry to see Chicken leave, but this is a show that has always been ageist and will get rid of old players way before they should. If he had spoken up and actually GIVEN his opinions instead of hemming and hawing, he'd still be there.

Oh my lord, is James jacked or what? Gravedigging must really be a great body building exercise.

anonymous - I agree that Chicken quite before he should have. Maybe he was afraid of standing out too much. And we all know what happens to those who stand out too much, too early in this game! He made a judgement call, thinking it would keep him out of trouble and it backfired on him, for sure!
April - my guess is that the commercial just showed part of an interview with Chicken that didn't make the show. We see that kind of thing all the time. Example - Samantha from BB8. We saw an interview with her before the show began and then never saw her again...

Love, Love Love, James! I missed the first 10 minutes so haven't really formed opinons on the majority of the other members. But I will say, as far as Courtney goes, it seems the majority is all in agreement of her... Yuck. Besides already having issues with her personality what's worse is her appearance. Is it just me or is anyone else concerned with her health? Dani on BB8 was dragged through the mill because of her thinness but, at least BB gives you food and she gained weight during her time in the house. Courtney will only lose weight and honestly I'm really scared to imagine what she will look like. When and if her tribe is up for eviction, for her own safety she has to be voted out.

Loved James.

Don't see Leslie as a "zealot", at least from last night. She did try and I actually agree with her actions. In the ceremony, it did require her to bow before buddah and that does go directly against her (and my) beliefs. She was not in your face, just very quietly retreated. I think she handled it well.

Liked Chicken, but don't think he would have lasted long. He would have reubbed people the wrong way very soon had he spoken up.

Can't wait for next week!

Hi Carolyn! I am so glad you are doing this blog. I just found your Big Brother blog a few weeks before the show ended. However, even though I was only on for a few weeks, it was the first website I checked every morning. HA!

As for the show last night, I was really rooting for Chicken at the beginning of the show. But he really didn't step up when he needed to. He was asked his opinion on the shelter numerous times and he would not give an opinion. He should have stepped up and shown some leadership (but not too much) and I think he would've stayed. I really enjoyed the season premiere. I think it will be a great season. I really liked James. I am still deciding on the rest of the group.

Thanks again Carolyn!!

I was put off by Courtenay's behavior in the temple. As far as Leslie, I totally get her. I got a weird feeling when they went in the temple. Then, was ok with it after he mentioned it was a welcome, but then they started to bow down. That, to me, takes it a little too far. I don't think she wanted to be disrespectful, but I see her struggle with it.

Long one - sorry!

Very first impressions:

Beautiful scenery. Back to complete basics like in earlier survivor shows and I hope it stays that way. Almost too little in the clothing area. Goodness, I think we're going to be seeing ALOT more of these people than we want to, especially Sherea poor girl-LOL!!

My favorite so far is James and if the voting is any indication of how the rest of you feel, then I'm not alone. Here's this big hulk of a guy, who is not bad to look at to boot, who is so reserved and shy. He just exudes something wonderful that I can't put my finger on.

The irritating players tend to stick out more than ones I just liked vs. really liked. Courtney-oh ack she is one irritating little punk and I hope she goes sooner than later.

I liked Ashley. At first glance I had to consciously tell myself to look past the lip rings, etc. and I think I'll like her alot as time goes by.

After reading a couple comments, I understand what some of you are saying about Leslie. I was very uncomfortable for her being put in a situation like that and trying to stand up (no pun intended) for her beliefs while not disrespecting others AND on national TV.

As a Christian myself I would have been terribly uncomfortable with what looked and sounded like worshipping no matter what Jeff said. Uhhhh, if it looks like a duck and it walks like a duck, then it probably is or it's too close for comfort. I think I would have done what she did, which was probably excruciatingly uncomfortable for her and everyone else, but.....better to be embarrassed for standing up for your beliefs than to betray them and not be true to yourself.

The immunity idol is different in that no one seriously bows to it (indicating worship); it is more a symbol of a goal to be reached.

Hope that made sense. I know this is a very tricky subject and I just wanted to explain a little. Please know that I respect what anyone believes or thinks whether I personally agree or not. One of my favorite sayings is: 'If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.' We all take stands thankfully, and this blog allows us to take them yet respect others.

I still can't believe you're doing this Carolyn, but I love that you are :-) I still have BBDish open and flitting around the internet to see various things about the after stuff!

The last Survivor series I watched was the first one so I'm a little rusty *lol* Carolyn, I found your site when I was looking for someplace to get BB8 news (that was my first BB experience). I had looked at the CBS site/message board, but the people over there were so nasty to each other that I couldn't stand to be there.

Anyway, now I'm gonna try Survivor. Have to say I'm like most others, James just melted my heart in his talk with Leslie. And Courtney is numero 1 on my hit list now that Chicken is gone. I wanted to like him, but he sealed his fate. His remark about how he had offered his opinion and nobody followed his advice so he was gonna keep his opinions to himself from then on said alot to me -- if he doesn't get his way, he ain't playing; he holds a grudge and he's stubborn - attributes that don't help you in a team situation. For the most part, I'm still trying to sort the other players out. Its going to be fun to watch and I'm looking forward to checking Carolyn's updates and reading the board.

Carolyn,

Booyah to you for jumping right back in the blogging...I only watched BB for the past 4 seasons but Survivor is my #1 and has been since it started ( I think I have a "secret" crush on Jeff Probst!) - I just cant get enough and am so glad they do it twice a year.

Anyway, I have read all the comments and everyone seems to agree with each other.

My comments/opinions are similar, but I am sorry to see Chicken go - he was definitely trying to get them to set up the shelter his way in the beginning but no one wanted to listen to him...I think that tribe has too many younger people who want to have fun, but after their rain-soaked night hope they learn to buckle down...

Which brings me to PG...I liked her- she did get a bit too bossy trying to get them to focus on setting up shelter, but someone had to step up, and I think her getting frustrated after the challenge and breaking down in tears was just the emotions getting to her. I would like to see her do well since she seems to be someone who would truly appreciate the opportunity to enjoy the experience.

When I saw Todd ( the flight attendant) on the web site prior to air, I thought for sure he would be the first to go but now I think he may be ok....

Courtney - yech...what a beeatch...I was born in NY and while I have lived in NJ for 9 years, I continue to work in NYC as I have for the past 25+ years...and let me tell you, after 9/11, New Yorkers know how to roll with the punches, adapt to all situations, and feel compassion and empathy for everyone. Glad to hear she is not a "real" New Yorker...and a waitress? Cant imagine her getting decent tips with that surly sarcastic attitude.

James - gotta love him...seems to me that he is a grave digger by choice...and that he probably feels like that is a very special and worthy job...he has a sweet soul...and Id love to see him win.

Erik's a hottie...reminds me a bit of the soccer player who won ( or did he take 2nd? ) several seasons ago...oh boy, the memory goes as the years go by.

Ashley the wrestler? mmmm...not sure how well she's going to be running around with those boobs, but I liked her and in challenges she will kick butt as long as her health is ok going forward. Glad she wasnt voted out

Aaron - love him too. He's gonna be a leader, and Frosti is just adorable.

Just one more comment...ok folks, when they were put on the train and heading into the wilds, why oh why didn't they take that opportunity to change their clothes? They had to know at that point that the game was beginning, so instead of looking out the window, get outta those dresses and heels and put on shorts, tanks and sneaks...seriously!

Cant wait till next Thursday...

I hope Courtney doesn't make it into the final anything just because people figure she won't win. PLEASE VOTE HER OFF!

And James, James, James. I barely know what his face looks like. That man's body is GORGEOUS as is he. I like him!

Hiya Carolyn and everyone here, I missed you all and didn't get a chance to watch Survivor till Sunday lol, I had taped it but was soso busy with other shows and job searching. Nice to be back. I was a little let down that Chicken left, I think he would have been the funny one on there had he continued, me and my son cracked up at him and my son is still mad he got voted out. The wee New Yorker got on me nerves, she is something else. So far I have one favourite and that is the Flight Attendant, he is a cutie.
